My latest effort to tie a sand eel has come out better. It's a long winged fly on a short hook. A fly that is up to 20 centimeters long would be impossble to cast on an avarage Danish fly rod, so I decided to shrink the eel a bit. The shortest version is approx. 5 centimeters (2") and the longest one 8-10 centimeters (3-4").

For now I'm calling it a Gurgling Sand Eel. I stole the idea from one of the guys at  14 Nov 2013 Sand eels live close to the bottom and burrow into the sand. The most important requirement to fish my pattern successfully is trust. As a rule, I do not change the fly at all, at most once or twice a day. The pattern at the end of the leader should therefore suit me from the beginning. I use a long shank, a little UV and a slightly transparent body.

Chameleon-like, they are most often dark olive (or even purplish) when found on mud flats, almost transparent or creamish olive when found on light sandy bottoms. I've probably caught more striped bass on this simple sand eel pattern than on all the rest of my flies put together. Tie some up, fish 'em and then hang on! The Sand Eel Special Fly is approx 4 inches (10 cm) long, and tied on size #4 Varivas style 994 / 2610 saltwater fly hooks. This style of fly is also known as an "EZ Sand Eel or E-Z Body Sand Eel because of the E-Z Body Tubing that is used on the body of the fly which makes a nice scale pattern. so i set to work and produced the above , the thing is there are thousands of patterns out there for sandeel flies and there is some differences in colouration as well i like the yellow and olive look seems to work well in Scottish waters , but then so do white and blue , pink and white are amongst other colours that are also good maybe just maybe the shape and movement is the key to these patterns Flatwing Eel Fly, Deerhair Head.
